چکیده

The long-term goal of this program is to understand the processes by which heat and mass are transported vertically by turbulent processes in the ocean in order to estimate the rates of these transports. Our ongoing studies of both the kinematics and dynamics of turbulence and other smallscale physical phenomena in the ocean emphasize observations, a continual program of sensor and instrumentation development, and interaction with turbulence modelers.

An Inequality between Fluxes of Energy and Enstrophy in 2D and QG Turbulence

In systems governing two-dimensional turbulence, surface quasi-geostrophic turbulence, (more generally α-turbulence), two-layer quasi-geostrophic turbulence, etc., there often exist two conservative quadratic quantities, one “energy”-like and one “enstrophy”-like. In a finite inertial range there are in general two spectral fluxes, one associated with each conserved quantity. The energy spectru...

Analysis and Modeling of Surfzone Turbulence and Bubbles

Turbulence in the surfzone mixes momentum vertically, transmits stress to the sea bed, influences the structure of the crossand alongshore currents, and controls the suspension of sediment from the sea bed. In many coastal and shelf environments, the sea-bed is the primary source of tur bulence due to bottom induced shear. In the surfzone, the breaking-wave generated turbulence dominates over ...

Does the subdominant part of the energy spectrum due to downscale energy cascade remain hidden in quasi - geostrophic turbulence ?

Up-gradient eddy fluxes of potential vorticity near the subtropical jet

[1] The role of eddy fluxes in the general circulation is often approached by treating eddies as (macro)turbulence. In this approach, the eddies act to diffuse certain quasiconservative quantities, such as potential vorticity (PV), along isentropic surfaces in the free atmosphere. The eddy fluxes are determined primarily by the eddy diffusivities and are necessarily down-gradient of the basic s...

Some aspects of the energy balance closure problem

After briefly discussing several reasons for the energy balance closure problem in the surface layer, the paper focuses on the influence of the low frequency part of the turbulence spectrum on the residual. Changes in the turbulent fluxes in this part of the turbulence spectrum were found to have a significant influence on the changes of the residual. Using the ogive method, it was found that t...

Turbulence Structure of the Hurricane Boundary Layer between the Outer Rainbands

As part of the Coupled Boundary Layers Air–Sea Transfer (CBLAST)-Hurricane program, flights were conducted to directly measure turbulent fluxes and turbulence properties in the high-wind boundary layer of hurricanes between the outer rainbands. For the first time, vertical profiles of normalized momentum fluxes, sensible heat and humidity fluxes, and variances of three-dimensional wind velociti...
